"We have to learn this why?"
D'OH!
Well, dancer or drummer....as my
friend Jenna says, "If you're a dancer, learning to drum will make
you a better dancer. If you're a drummer, learning to dance will make
you a better drummer."
There
it is boys and girls and I've seen the proof of it too many times to argue
with her logic.
Drums, drummers and drumming come
in all shapes, sizes, colors, materials and cultures. Those we are most
familiar with in our (mine and my friends') small section of the world
are Middle Eastern drums (Doumbek, Darabuka, Tar, Bendir and Riq...to
name a few) and Middle Eastern Rhythms, everything from 2/4 to 21/8...well,
some (one) of us have the hang of that last bit...but not many.
We have had the fortune of attending
local seminars and classes with Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Salah Dawson-Miller,
Alessandra Belloni, and Armando Mafufo. Other drummers who have richly
influenced our drumming have included; Billy Woods, David Kourup, Gwendolyn
Cornell (of Soora Gameela), and certainly not least, our drummer of luuuuv
Lamar Roy.
