Meditation
Dance Meditation with Shamsi

In general, we practice meditation to let go of our egos--esse?ntially to learn to think beyond the self and hopefully to ultimately join the greater "One."

When Dancers are able to meditate they can let go of the conscious aspects of their dance: "What do I look like?" "Am I dancing well?" "Who is watching me?" etc... Once a dancer is able to let go of these ego-based questions and truly move from their center--from the core of the unconcious body and mind--then they can truly dance their authentic selves into being. This allows a dancers to move beyond acheiving techinal perfection and into the bliss that is movement without motivation.

Shamsi began her study of dance meditation in 2002 and has since become involved in receiving her teacher certification. Bayou Shimmy therefore has the privilege of having this experience available to all of its dancers.

Hatha Yoga with?
Katherine Rae Douglass

During her freshman year of highschool, Katherine found herself a protege of Marianne Srinivasan, a notable Yoga instructor in Louisiana. First she was driven to Yoga as an excape from everyday stressors, and for its spiritual benefits. Later the health benefits, physiological effects, and improved physical appearance became apparent after regular practice. This led to a new found curiosity for the world of Yoga. At the age of 16 she became certified to teach Yoga through the International Alliance for Fitness Professionals. Since then she has been teaching a rigorous form of Hatha Yoga for YMCA, Spectrum fitness club, and Baton Rouge General Hospital. She is currently entering her second year at Louisiana State University, majoring in Kinesiology.
